The competition entry KAKSKÕLA proposes a new single-storey timber building for Tallinn University of Applied Sciences’ Mõdriku study centre, tying the manor park buildings into one coherent whole. Between the two linear accommodation wings and the shared public core are courtyards – one more representative, centred around the cafeteria, and the other more homely and private for students to spend time in.
The student residence concept is based on a corridor running through the building that becomes an extension of the living spaces: small “neighbourhoods” with shared kitchens encourage socialising, while still allowing everyone to retreat to their own room. All rooms have direct access to the outdoors, making everyday living feel more spacious and homelike.
The architecture highlights the value of local timber – a simple timber frame, exposed trusses and natural finishes give the house its character and support the nearly zero-energy building concept. The recreation area connected to Mõdriku manor park, along with an outdoor gym, ball court and outdoor kitchen, together create a complete living environment for studying, relaxing and meeting up.
