The aim of a bridge is to give new place for everyday activities throughout the journey. The deck becomes a linear plaza with two pace options. One is to use fast line as a quick crossing and the other gives an opportunity to have a stroll by going up and down the helix down to the Nile. The fast line gives easy access also for cyclists keeping in mind that new modes of movement have to be implemented to aim towards a more sustainable future.
The helix is architecturally working as a knot binding together two arcs. One side of the helix is a gallery on concrete paths that is supported by suitable steel columns and timber frames giving shade through solar-control glass. The other side gives on the contrast a walk down to the river under the sky. In the bottom of the helix lies a clean water pool with a promenade surrounding it.
The structural idea is based on efficient use of materials and by keeping in mind environmental conservation aspects. Our proposal is a network arch type bridge which is the best option in the given situation considering spans that need to be covered. From the foundations to the top of the arcs the advantages of the best features of different materials – timber, steel, concrete, solar-control glass – are all together combined into one sound structure. A smooth and slender deck is accomplished by post-tensioning it in both, the longitudinal and transversal, directions and specially arranged hangers.
