New collective spaces for Thessaloniki, Greece, 1997,
with Ülar Mark, Inga Raukas, Toomas Tammis.
The base for our innovation is the existing map. Our aim is to deconstruct its mathematical prediction and linear continuity.
We take the traditional mapping of the physical urban situation as an example of a possible starting point. Deconstructing the graphical image of the map allows us to reinvent its interpretation. Doing so we have also projected the influences of the surroundings onto the sites. Mirroring and dispersion of surroundings creates the new map.
We call it the VIRTUAL MAP as it brings out the richness of the possibilities of urban situations, rather than the fixed physical surroundings. The image is of a pulsating life in a continuous change. For thinking about public spaces it gives an opportunity to see them primary to the physical buildings as well as to deal with the mutual influences and intermediate areas.
